Current Events QTR 2 Week 6: Drunken Motorist Drives Wrong Way Down Highway

http://www.wlky.com/r/26079854/detail.html

A Wisconsin man was charged with drunk driving, how they caught him? Well, he was driving on the wrong side of the highway. The man refused to follow the officers commands. You might be thinking, oh well this is just another stupid young person maybe in their twenties. Well this man is 77 years old. Just saying. The man was charged with drunk and reckless driving.
How I feel-
Before I say ANYTHING else, that picture is hysterical. I think that guy was still a bit drunk when the picture was taken. Or maybe hes just weird. I don't know. Well I think hes stupid for drinking and then hopping going for a drive, on a motorcycle no less. Hmmm... if he wanted to drive on the wrong side of the road so bad he should have gone to England, their streets are backwards from ours.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 6: Women steal items, hiding it in their body

Two women were arrested for stealing from a TJ Maxx store, and you will never guess where they hid it. Some people hide stolen goods in a stroller or in their purse. No, this duo hid their items, in their belly fat. They stole 4 pairs of boots, 3 jeans, a wallet and gloves. All costing about $2,600 all together. They hid these items in places like their stomach, and under their armpits.

How I feel-
First of all, ew!!! How could they think THAT was a good hiding spot? Also, how did they manage to fit THAT MUCH?  I can clearly see how they were caught in the store I mean, they could probably see lumps their stomach. They also brought a knife to take off the tags, okay, but people might have thought they were planning to use it for...other reasons.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 5: 6-month-old killed by falling branch at Central Park Zoo

How would you feel if you were enjoying a sunny day at the zoo by the sea lion exhibit and then you witness a 6-month-old's death, because of a falling tree branch? This wasn't the first time this happened at the Central Park Zoo in New York. But this wasn't the first time this happened. I found like five other storys like this with deaths or injurys from a falling tree branch at that park. Baby Cianna's father was taking her picture near the sea lion exhibit when a branch above them suddenly snapped and came falling down upon them. Bystander said they heard a creaking noise, and then a scream. The mother was holding Cianna and the baby fell out of her arms. Another bystander was an intensive care nurse and she ran over an gave the baby CPR. They first felt a pulse, but while they were doing chest compressions when the pulse stopped.  The baby's mother was badly injured. The mother and baby were rushed to a near by hospital, but the baby was pronounced dead when she arrived.

How i feel-
Oh. My. God. I would be so mad!!!! You go to enjoy a nice day at the zoo and you go home without a child? I think that zoo needs to fix that tree problem, or like make the squirrels go away or something. Maybe they should just get rid of those types of trees. I'm not sure why I'm interested in these types of stories but when i read them I get mad for those familys. I think that zoo needs to close down for a while and find out whats happening with those trees

Current Events QTR 2 Week 3: Florida teens charged with setting boy on fire /post 10

3 boys were accused of attempted murder because of a bet Michael Brewer did not pay. One of the boys, Bent, demanded $40 he said that Brewer had owed him, and Brewer didn't pay. Bent, who was then angered, stole Brewer's father's bicycle. Brewer told the cops, and then they arrested Bent. The next day, after Bent was released, the boya found Brewer and surrounded him. Detectives say that eyewitnesses had told them that 15-year-old Jarvis poured alcohol all over Brewer and then16-year-old Mendez got a lighter and set the boy on fire. Bent was encouraging the attack. Brewer said he ran about 100 yards to an apartment complex pool, where he quickly jumped in, to stop the flames. Brewer suffered burns on over 65 percent of his body and was in the hospital for more than two months. The three boys Denver Jarvis and Mathew Bent, both now 16, are going to jail for 10 years and have probation after wards for another 10 years and Jesus Mendez, now 17 will be going  to jail for 15 years with 10 years probation.

How I feel-
Well they deserve the prison time. Was it worth going to jail to get a $40 dollar bet? I don't think so. I think it was stupid of them to even do that, no one really gets away with committing crimes anymore. I mean even if you weren't friends anymore, but you used to be, how could you do that to someone you cared about? Well apparently they didn't care about him. They must not of cared about them selves either because if you care about yourself you wouldn't do that and know your going to jail.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 2: Gunman arrested after Walmart standoff/post 9

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/10/29/nevada.walmart.shooting/index.html
A gunman who opened fire on employees at Walmart in Reno, Nevada, was arrested Friday after a six-hour standoff with police.John Gillane the shooter, 46, walked into Walmart at 8:30 in the morning and started firing. He barricaded himself in an office there. Police got him out at 2:30 that afternoon. Three employees were hurt and two are still in the hospital from Friday night in serious condition.

How I feel-
Nowadays, i don't get why people do these things. It's stupid, and, about 95% of the time they are caught and thrown in jail. I hope those people shot get well and heal. I also hope the man is put in jail for a long time because who's to say he wont do something like that again when he gets out? The only reason they are put in jail is so they will learn a lesson but i bet most of them don't.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 1: Suspect returns to crime scene to ask cops for cigarrette/post 8

Jaime Adan Esquivel, 36, was accused of stealing a cash register and 2 Ronald McDonald charity donation boxes from a local dry cleaning business. Okay, he wasn't accused of stealing them, he did steal them. Jaime returned to the scene of the crime and asked 2 police men for a cigarette. When cops asked him for identification, he led them back to his home to retrieve it. When they got there they found 2 Ronald McDonald boxes and change all over the place. Jaime was charged with burglary and his bail was set to $10,000.

My Opinion
Well that was stupid what he did. He should have known not to go back to THE SCENE OF THE CRIME!!!! Apparently he has no common scene because i think its obvious that you would know not to do that, when they know for a fact, that they have the boxes at their home. I hope all the money was found and brought back to donate to the charity. Well...that must have been one of the easiest crimes to solve...ever.

Current events week 7: Man saved by his cell phone

54 year old Juan Camarena said that his cell phone saved his life. Why? Juan got a new job as a handyman and was informed that the old super was still angry for being fired and replaced. Juan was confronted by the man who was fired and in the stairwell. The guy had a gun in his pocket, reached for it, and shot at Juan. Luckily, Juan's Nextel was in his jacket pocket. The phone took the bullet and only had a scratch. Juan said the shooter was only about five feet away. Police have footage of the shooter and are working to catch him fast. Juan said "I'm still alive, thank God, That Nextel saved me."
How I feel-
That man is very lucky he has his phone in his pocket. If he hadn't had it he could have been killed. That man shouldn't have been that mad for getting fired. It probably just wasn't working out. I hope police get that man fast because that wasn't right to do.

Current events week 6: Mongolia to partner on rare earth mining

Japan has agreed to help Mongolia make mines to get rare earth metals. "Mongolia has high potential in mineral material development and this will serve the two countries' national interests,"as said by Kan.Officials said Batbold said Mongolia will be able to produce value-added products by using highly advanced Japanese technology. Rare earth metals from China suddenly dried up last month while Japan and China were in a fighting over the arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain whose trawler collided with a Japanase Coast Guard near the Senkaku Islands, which are controlled by Japan but is claimed by China and Taiwan. Rare earth metals are a class of 17 elements which includes neodymium, dysprosium and cerium which are used to produce high-tech products ranging from cell phones and digital cameras to flat-panel TVs and hybrid cars. China accounts for about 97 percent of the world's supply of rare metals and Japan is almost 90 percent dependent on China to get them, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
How i feel-
I think its cool we are getting rare metals! We just have to make sure we are careful so that miners won't get stuck like in Chile. The metals will be very useful and it will be cool to get new technology. I hope this won't start something like a war between china and japan. It will be exciting to see what they come up with

Parrot arrested!!!

In Barranquilla, Colombia wednesday, a parrot was arrested. Lorenzo, the arrested parrot, was squaking the pharse, "run, run or the cat will get you!" Which led cops to think there was a robbery being held. Nearly 300 cop cars arrived at the scene but found the place vacated. What they found though was a trained parrot who repeated the phrase. According to authorities alerted the inmates and thieves to beat feet. Lorenzo was arrested and turned over to an ainmal shelter.
LorenzoHow I feel-
I think it was dumb,  scratch that, flat out ridiculous that a parrot had been arrested. It wasn't his fault he had been trained to say that! He probably didn't even know what he was saying. He must have been scared when he saw so many people outside, all grabbing at him. Why does it seem like other countries always do...um...lets say weird things. American's wouldn't have done that, are we more educated?

Baby squirrel adopted by mother cat

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2010/09/13/dnt.cat.takes.in.squirrel.WLBT?iref=allsearch

A mother kitten had adopted a baby squirrel, odd isn't it? The cat had just given birth to a new litter of kittens and her owners found a baby squirrel that had fallen out of a tree. The owner did not know how to climb trees to put the animal back, so she put the baby in a box with the kittens. The mother adopted the baby right away. The baby squirrel has adapted easily to the new family and has even learned how to purr when being pet! The squirrel can never be released back into the wild because it doesn't know how to fend for  its self.

How i feel
I think this is a very neat story. You don't hear about a squirrel being adopted by a cat every day. It if very sweet how the cat had adopted the animal. The thing that kind of bugs me though is, yes, any one with a heart would have brought in the squirrel, but the squirrel would never be with their original family ever again. The squirrel mother must have been very sad to find one of her baby's had dissapeard.

Doctor found dead in chimney Saturday

Jacquelyn Kotarac, 49, had been reported missing on Thursday and her body had been found lodged in her boyfriends chimney on Saturday. Kotarac was last seen attempting to get into her boyfriends house late Wednesday night. Police did not say who the boyfriend was or why Kotarac was trying to get inside his house. When Kotarac did not show up to work Thursday, her assistant, and Kotarac's boyfriend searched the house. Her car and belongings were there, but there was no sign that she had gotten inside the building. Friday, the neighbors said they smelled an odd odor and heard a distant cry for help, which they thought was coming from a near by swimming pool. The house-sitter smelled a strong odor coming from the fireplace, and he decided to inspect when it was coming from. That's when he located the deceased woman lodged in the flue about two feet above the top of the fireplace inside opening. It took police 5 hours to get the body out of the fireplace, and it horrified Kotarac's family upon thinking how long she had been up there.
How i feel- After reading the article it made me wonder, why did the neighbors think it was kids yelling help from a pool? Were they not curious if the children were actually in danger? I think it is very sad that Kotarac had died. But i am still wondering why she wanted to get into the home. Did the boyfriend take something of hers? You would think a doctor would think a bit more smart.

Civics blog post #2

I read the article "Freed American arrives home from North Korea" that was showed on CNN. A man named Aijalon Mahli Gomes was rescued from North Korea by former president Jimmy Carter. Gomes was sentenced to 8 years of hard labor for crossing of the North Korean border illegally. Former president brought him home in a private jet the other day. Gomes` family's eyes welled with tears when he stepped off the jet.
How i feel about the article-
I am very happy that Gomes has returned. I was unfair that he was sentenced 8 years for crossing over illegally. It was very kind of Jimmy Carter to spend his time bringing him home. I'm glad that Gomes was reunited with his family. His family is happy to see him back i know i would be if he were in my family

Was King Tut Murdered?

Many people were confused about this for many, many, years; but scientists now have what they think is the answer. Scientists recently explored King Tut's tomb to study the deceased teen pharaoh. Scientists studied the teens cadaver and found that shortly before the boys death, he may have tripped, injuring his foot. He had a weak immune system so he couldn't heal properly, and a malaria infection killed him. Tut's tomb was the only one not stolen from, and the artifacts will be placed permanently in a museum being built in Cairo, Egypt.
What i feel - I feel like there may still be a mystery behind Tut's death. Maybe he was murdered. I think that the items that were in his tomb should stay there, because they were put there for Tut in the afterlife. It's what the people of Egypt believed in and they would be outraged to hear that the items are being taken out of his tomb. I think that maybe they should let people explore the pyramids because many people are curious about them. I think the artifacts should stay where they were put and the pyramid become a museum.
