Current Events QTR 2 Week 5: 6-month-old killed by falling branch at Central Park Zoo

How would you feel if you were enjoying a sunny day at the zoo by the sea lion exhibit and then you witness a 6-month-old's death, because of a falling tree branch? This wasn't the first time this happened at the Central Park Zoo in New York. But this wasn't the first time this happened. I found like five other storys like this with deaths or injurys from a falling tree branch at that park. Baby Cianna's father was taking her picture near the sea lion exhibit when a branch above them suddenly snapped and came falling down upon them. Bystander said they heard a creaking noise, and then a scream. The mother was holding Cianna and the baby fell out of her arms. Another bystander was an intensive care nurse and she ran over an gave the baby CPR. They first felt a pulse, but while they were doing chest compressions when the pulse stopped.  The baby's mother was badly injured. The mother and baby were rushed to a near by hospital, but the baby was pronounced dead when she arrived.

How i feel-
Oh. My. God. I would be so mad!!!! You go to enjoy a nice day at the zoo and you go home without a child? I think that zoo needs to fix that tree problem, or like make the squirrels go away or something. Maybe they should just get rid of those types of trees. I'm not sure why I'm interested in these types of stories but when i read them I get mad for those familys. I think that zoo needs to close down for a while and find out whats happening with those trees

Current Events QTR 2 Week 3: Florida teens charged with setting boy on fire /post 10

3 boys were accused of attempted murder because of a bet Michael Brewer did not pay. One of the boys, Bent, demanded $40 he said that Brewer had owed him, and Brewer didn't pay. Bent, who was then angered, stole Brewer's father's bicycle. Brewer told the cops, and then they arrested Bent. The next day, after Bent was released, the boya found Brewer and surrounded him. Detectives say that eyewitnesses had told them that 15-year-old Jarvis poured alcohol all over Brewer and then16-year-old Mendez got a lighter and set the boy on fire. Bent was encouraging the attack. Brewer said he ran about 100 yards to an apartment complex pool, where he quickly jumped in, to stop the flames. Brewer suffered burns on over 65 percent of his body and was in the hospital for more than two months. The three boys Denver Jarvis and Mathew Bent, both now 16, are going to jail for 10 years and have probation after wards for another 10 years and Jesus Mendez, now 17 will be going  to jail for 15 years with 10 years probation.

How I feel-
Well they deserve the prison time. Was it worth going to jail to get a $40 dollar bet? I don't think so. I think it was stupid of them to even do that, no one really gets away with committing crimes anymore. I mean even if you weren't friends anymore, but you used to be, how could you do that to someone you cared about? Well apparently they didn't care about him. They must not of cared about them selves either because if you care about yourself you wouldn't do that and know your going to jail.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 2: Gunman arrested after Walmart standoff/post 9

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/10/29/nevada.walmart.shooting/index.html
A gunman who opened fire on employees at Walmart in Reno, Nevada, was arrested Friday after a six-hour standoff with police.John Gillane the shooter, 46, walked into Walmart at 8:30 in the morning and started firing. He barricaded himself in an office there. Police got him out at 2:30 that afternoon. Three employees were hurt and two are still in the hospital from Friday night in serious condition.

How I feel-
Nowadays, i don't get why people do these things. It's stupid, and, about 95% of the time they are caught and thrown in jail. I hope those people shot get well and heal. I also hope the man is put in jail for a long time because who's to say he wont do something like that again when he gets out? The only reason they are put in jail is so they will learn a lesson but i bet most of them don't.

Current Events QTR 2 Week 1: Suspect returns to crime scene to ask cops for cigarrette/post 8

Jaime Adan Esquivel, 36, was accused of stealing a cash register and 2 Ronald McDonald charity donation boxes from a local dry cleaning business. Okay, he wasn't accused of stealing them, he did steal them. Jaime returned to the scene of the crime and asked 2 police men for a cigarette. When cops asked him for identification, he led them back to his home to retrieve it. When they got there they found 2 Ronald McDonald boxes and change all over the place. Jaime was charged with burglary and his bail was set to $10,000.

My Opinion
Well that was stupid what he did. He should have known not to go back to THE SCENE OF THE CRIME!!!! Apparently he has no common scene because i think its obvious that you would know not to do that, when they know for a fact, that they have the boxes at their home. I hope all the money was found and brought back to donate to the charity. Well...that must have been one of the easiest crimes to solve...ever.

Current events week 7: Man saved by his cell phone

54 year old Juan Camarena said that his cell phone saved his life. Why? Juan got a new job as a handyman and was informed that the old super was still angry for being fired and replaced. Juan was confronted by the man who was fired and in the stairwell. The guy had a gun in his pocket, reached for it, and shot at Juan. Luckily, Juan's Nextel was in his jacket pocket. The phone took the bullet and only had a scratch. Juan said the shooter was only about five feet away. Police have footage of the shooter and are working to catch him fast. Juan said "I'm still alive, thank God, That Nextel saved me."
How I feel-
That man is very lucky he has his phone in his pocket. If he hadn't had it he could have been killed. That man shouldn't have been that mad for getting fired. It probably just wasn't working out. I hope police get that man fast because that wasn't right to do.

Current events week 6: Mongolia to partner on rare earth mining

Japan has agreed to help Mongolia make mines to get rare earth metals. "Mongolia has high potential in mineral material development and this will serve the two countries' national interests,"as said by Kan.Officials said Batbold said Mongolia will be able to produce value-added products by using highly advanced Japanese technology. Rare earth metals from China suddenly dried up last month while Japan and China were in a fighting over the arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain whose trawler collided with a Japanase Coast Guard near the Senkaku Islands, which are controlled by Japan but is claimed by China and Taiwan. Rare earth metals are a class of 17 elements which includes neodymium, dysprosium and cerium which are used to produce high-tech products ranging from cell phones and digital cameras to flat-panel TVs and hybrid cars. China accounts for about 97 percent of the world's supply of rare metals and Japan is almost 90 percent dependent on China to get them, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
How i feel-
I think its cool we are getting rare metals! We just have to make sure we are careful so that miners won't get stuck like in Chile. The metals will be very useful and it will be cool to get new technology. I hope this won't start something like a war between china and japan. It will be exciting to see what they come up with

Parrot arrested!!!

In Barranquilla, Colombia wednesday, a parrot was arrested. Lorenzo, the arrested parrot, was squaking the pharse, "run, run or the cat will get you!" Which led cops to think there was a robbery being held. Nearly 300 cop cars arrived at the scene but found the place vacated. What they found though was a trained parrot who repeated the phrase. According to authorities alerted the inmates and thieves to beat feet. Lorenzo was arrested and turned over to an ainmal shelter.
LorenzoHow I feel-
I think it was dumb,  scratch that, flat out ridiculous that a parrot had been arrested. It wasn't his fault he had been trained to say that! He probably didn't even know what he was saying. He must have been scared when he saw so many people outside, all grabbing at him. Why does it seem like other countries always do...um...lets say weird things. American's wouldn't have done that, are we more educated?
